Opinions vary regarding whether most businesspeople are motivated by the desire for money. I disagree with the statement for the following two reasons. For one thing, most businesspeople are obviously motivated by making a contribution to society, not seeking money itself. Additionally, they even sacrifice profits in order to improve their company’s image.
First of all, most businesspeople are encouraged by the societal contribution, and are not motivated by the desire for money. In general, business people are supposed to maximize company’s profit and earn more money. However, as society change, many companies are interested in making contribution to societal activities, such as social service and donation. Thus, it can be argued that most businesspeople concentrate on making money. According to a study conducted by Korean National Research Center, 71 percent of surveyed CEOs answered that they feel enriched and successful during the process of working for the well-being of all people. Based on the study, they think that making contribution to society outweigh only earning money as successful economic leaders. In this context, today’s business people do only not focus on making money.
In addition, some businesspeople seem to give up their profits in order to improve and maintain company image. In the past, many businesspeople did not put much weigh on company image. However, nowadays, most businesspeople are regarded highly since company image is ultimately connected to long-term company profits. Thus, many businesspeople prefer good company image over their short-term profits. For example, suppose that a company sells products that prove to have a critical flaws. In this case, if the company does not stop selling those products, and thus improve its image, many customers will boycott to buy its products, which prevent the company from making long-term profits. Therefore, many businesspeople try to improve a good image at the expense of money.
In conclusion, today’s most businesspeople tend to pursue making contribution to society and improving company image, which will not be a serious blow to their potential profits. |
