Nowadays as cities grow, and population centers towards certain areas, the need of higher-storied buildings to accomidate more people increases as well. And unfortunatelly, many building that have been the monument of the city's history are being put down in order to provide grounds for these buildings. However, I strongly believe that the value an old, historic architecture possess is far greater that that of a modern building, and therefore should be protected instead of destroyed by means of constructing new buildings.
One of the reasons to protect historically valuable buildings is because of their aesthetic value. Compared to skyrocketing modern day edifices, which lack of respect to their surroundings, buildings of of the past tend to have harmony with their surroundings, thus creating a more natrual and balances scene. It is not unusuall to find oneself suffocated in modern cities, overflown with skyscrapers. On the contrary, low and old buildings, surrounded by trees and gardens definately provide the people with more comforting views, which modern people lack of.
Old buildings also have historical value, serving as a monument of the city's history. As the city has grown through out the decades and centuries, buildings are constructed to accomidate the resident's need. And among these buildings, there are some that have meaning within. For instance, the first library, theater, or baseball stadium would be of great value. A father could take his son to such place, and share his stories of the past. Childers will have places to visit in their local community for field trips, instead of heading out of town.
Finally, destroying old building isn't necessary to construct new buildings. As the city grows, it also expands in size. Instead of putting down already built structures, the city could buid new towns in close areas. The consideration of demolishing an old building which is of historical value, must be the last resort. |
