To get a variety of information, people turn to news media on everyday basis. Some people may argue that the news media is a totally believable and fair source of information. However, I disagree with the opinion with several reasons. First, every writer has their own perspective. Second, some news media belongs to certain conglomerates.
Most of all, journalists write articles from their point of view. No matter how they try to be impartial on the news, the articles tend to have biased opinions. When I was on a humanitarian mission in Africa, I had an opportunity to experience African people’s suffering. Many people died of hunger and disease. Many children were malnourished and forced to work. They had little or no access to education. Worse, due to the poor health system, ADIS patients were not treated properly and spread diseases to others including their own family members. I really did not understand why those innocent people had to live in such horrible conditions. To do know more about the countries, I searched the Internet for newspaper and magazine articles. In fact, newspapers showed conflicting opinions. One newspaper criticized lack of support to African nations. Another article asserted that most African governments were corrupt and paid little attention to their citizen’s wellbeing. More and more I read African related articles, I got confused since all writers have different perspective about the matter.
Second, several news media belongs to conglomerates. Since some news media is under certain companies, they can control their related news to be good way. In this case, the news show biased opinions about the company’s products or associated information. One of my country’s broadcast stations can be an example. The news station connected a big snack company. When the company’s products were on the issues about security for baby food, every news media condemned and assaulted the company except the news station. The broadcast station put all efforts to recover the company’s image by focusing on good side such as donation, volunteer work. In this sense, people could get wrong and injustice information through the biased news media.
To sum up, it is an obvious idea that news media should be a fair source of information. Nevertheless, they could not be an unbiased source. First, journalists write articles biased on their viewpoint. Second, some news media are related with big companies.
