▶ Your Answer :
Thinking back my high school years,
there are several things that I feel regretful. One of them is the fact that I
didn’t realize the importance of math. I was sick of calculating numbers and memorizing
formulas. I escaped from every chance I could study math seriously. Back then,
I thought math only counts for the college entrance exam. However, if I get to
have a chance to study a subject now, I would definitely choose mathematics. There
are two reasons. One is its practicality and the other is that it is such a
precise and accurate subject. First
of all, mathematics can come in useful in everyday life. On a daily basis,
people encounter numbers and data. And they need to reorganize the numbers to
create a meaningful information. And in this kind of activities, math can be a
useful background knowledge to process numbers. For example, there was a time I
went to a grocery shopping with my friend who was excellent at math. We were
given a limited sum of money and a list of products that were in need. I just put
the products that were listed in the cart, without calculating their total
prices. Since I never had the expertise in math, I didn’t know how to calculate
it or how to compare the sum of the prices with the given amount of money.
However, my friend could figure out the total prices of the products at once,
just by looking at the price tags. And then, she even realized how much money
would be left over. Studying math made her fast at calculating and good at
processing data, which are abilities handy in daily life. Hence, math is a practical
subject. Secondly,
mathematics is an accurate subject. It means that it is unchangeable however we
look at it. A math question has an obvious logic underlying in it and it also
has several set formulas. If we know what the question is asking and what formulas
to use, we will end up having the same answer. The answer is not subject to
change depending on different perspectives. In comparison, literature, which is
my major, is completely different. Even though we look at the same book, the
interpretation can vary depending on various points of view. For example, there
is a Korean literature entitled “Dandelion.” In this novel, there was a girl
who always liked to wear purple sweater. On a heavily raining day, she plays out
on the mountain and then she suddenly disappears. Some analysts say that it is
an obvious metaphor of death since the color purple is symbolic of mortality.
However, other experts say that it indicates simply the disappearance of the
girl, not the death. As such, literature or other many subjects do not have a
settled interpretation. However, math does! That is another reason why math is
such an attractive subject. In
conclusion, math is a useful tool that can be utilized in a daily life. Also,
it has an accurate and settled interpretation and logic. For these reasons, I
would like to study math if I had the chance to study a subject. Studying math might
fill in my ability to deal with numbers and it could be fun, too.
