Many schools have invested huge amount of money on university libraries, not on athletic departments. Some people might agree with the policy because libraries are important facility for students to find and read materials to do their project. However, I believe that sports facilities are as essential as libraries.
To begin with, sports activities can improve students' physical health, which is necessary for students to focus on academic unceasingly. Everyone knows that students nowadays spend most of their time on either studying or working, sitting on a chair. Even when they have free time, they usully kill their time watching TV or surfing the internet without any physical movement. As a result, many students suffer from obesity, muscle pain, and other physical problems. If a university initiate to develop various sports programs that students can enjoy by investing lots of money on athletic departments, more students can stay fit and healthy owing to the school's efforts.
On top of that, sports activities enhance students' social skills. It doesn't take a genius to know that the best method of learning teamwork skills is playing sports activities. In this sense, if schools allocate more fund on sports program, more students can have opportunities to learn not only how to mingle with others but also how to cooperate with others. There is a reliable research that supports my opinion. According to Gallup, the famous research institute, 70% of employers said that they value applicants' sports experiences because they believe that sports experiences can show whether applicants have strong social skills. It implicates that investing on athletic department can result in encouraging students to improve social skills that serve their future career.
To summarize, schools should raise the fund for athletic department as they do for libraries because it helps students not only stay healthy, but also improve social skill. All in all, no one can underestimate the necessity of investing on sports activities. |
