It is generally said that gaining self-confidence is more important than specific knowledge. Some people disagree with the statement because knowledge is fundamental for students to solve various problems. I, however, obtaining self-confidence plays a more critical role in success of one's life in the fast paced society.
To begin with, having self-confidence encourages people to deal with unexpected situations well, which can be the key to success. Everyone knows that we are in the world of ambiguity. In other words, we are supposed to meet with unexpected situations, so we should make a decision vigorously and proactively. Otherwise, we would miss precious chances to achieve our goals. For example, I have two friends, Min and Sue. Both of them have opposite temperaments, one with proactive attitude and enjoying challenges, another with timid character, sticking to manuals, and playing everything safe. After graduating universities, they began running their own businesses, and last year they faced serious financial problems. Timid Sue was so frightened and gave up quickly, leaving too much debt on his hand. On the contrary, Min, a brave and confident fellow, waited and searched for another opportunity. As a result, he accepted huge subsidy from the local government, making his company even stronger. Likewise, strong mind set enables people to pursue his goal in spite of hardships.
On top of that, employers that search fresh, confident, and creative applicants are increasingly common. It dosen't take genius to know that markets are changing so fast that many companies try to seek breakthrough ways more and more. Book knowledge, however, is never enough to get creative and innovative ideas. There is reliable research that reflects this phenomenon. According to the Ministry of Labor of Korea, 70% of employers increased the portion of interview, which check applicant's proactive attitue. They also responded that they lower the portion of GPA and school brands. It implicates that cofident and proactive attitude of applicants will be becoming more crucial in future job market.
To summarize what I mentioned above, it is more important for teachers to help student gain self-confidence than to teach specific knowledge, considering decision making and future employment. All in all, no one can deny the importance of self-confidence.
