It is often said that zoo is harmful for animals because they have to be confined in artificail envronment. I belive, eventhough zoo deprive the wildness from animals, it has to keep operating in modern society for the following two reasons: securing the spiece diversity, and infroming people to the importance of coexsitence of animail and human.
To begin with, zoos can secure diversity of animal spieces by ivestigating and carring animails, especially those in danger of extinction. There are people calling zoos a Noa's boat for rare animalls, because zoos not only show animalls to visitors, but also act as a labortory for research and explore various animals which can not survive in current environment. This is due to the fact that pollution in mordern society makes many animals be endangered. Thus, they need specaial attention and care for keep their life and reproduce, and zoos play a pivital role in that. An independent documentary director, Youn Whang, for instance, has been insisting the importance of zoos to protect animals in danger because of the inappropriate circumstances caused by rural development and massive defrestration in today's society.
Next, zoos provide opportunity humans to connect to animal, recognizing the importance of nature and coexistence with animals. Now, many people have usually fogotten the fuctions of other creatures on earth because of their busy and hectic schedule. We humans are easy to only focus on civilized human life. Neverthless, it is important to realize that our lives are related to the whole nature including wild animals.Unfortunately, humans can not have these chances, though. While people visit zoos, they can remind the importance of animals. A survery conducted by the Ministry of Environment of Korea in 2007, biologists have arugued that the experience of visiting zoos has a positive effect on the education for children to perceive the importance of protecting animals. This result shows that zoos play a important role in imform poeple the affirmative perspectives towards environment protection.
