While the author of the reading passage argues that HOV lanes will improve the freeway efficiency, the lecturer opposes the reading's assertion with counter views.
First of all, according to the passage, High Occupancy vehilcle system would bring fast commute because there will be less cars in highways. On the contrary, the lecturer mentions that HOV lanes would have problem in terms with safety. The speaker also states that there are more accidents than before because of fast moving vehicles in particular highways.
Additionally, the reading passage then points out that fuel consumption would decrease because of reduce of the number of personal cars. The professor, however, counters by stating that there is no significant effect about this. He adds that usually cars in traffic jam use more fuels than the cars moving. Since there are more congested areas in HOV lanes, vehicles would burn more fuels than before.
Finally, the author of the reading passage claims that by reducing the numbers of cars on the road, there would be less emission from cars which makes air polluted. On the other hand, the speaker insists that in fact there is no rise in efficiency in road traffic after adopting this policy. According to him, cross sections of HOV lanes and normal roads increase the jams on the road.
In conclusion, the lecturer does not think that HOV lanes actually can garuantee the efficiency of traffic. |
