It is often argued that students should attend classes for 11 months a
year for better education. Even though the jury is still out, I firmly disagree
with the statement. The rationale behind this is that students should attain a
variety of experiences out of school. Moreover, it is necessary for students to
relieve their stress.
First, students should do some extra-classroom activities. Students
can learn various lessons from not only school, but also other places inclusive
of natural venues, other cities, or a company where they do a part-time job at.
Even though some people argued that school education comes before any other
activities, it is more justifiable to contend that school is not the only venue
of education. Rather, what students can get from these fields out of classrooms
are not the same as something in the text book, and in sometimes, they are even
more useful for students than knowledge from school is. For example, according
to a research recently conducted by the National Research Foundation of Korea,
three quarter of successful CEO in Korea said that the factors which played the
most pivotal role in getting a social success are not the knowledge from text
books, but a variety of experiences from out of school social activities. This
is because extra-curricular lessons enable students to broaden their
perspective by doing something in person, but school education is limited to
only read or listen to other people’s experiences. Therefore, this clearly
indicates how crucial it is that students should take their vacation longer.
On the top of that, students need to let go of learning for reducing
their stress. Of course, it may be true that studying without pause is an
efficient way in terms of using time, but it is not a good method to work
effectively. According to a number of scholars on fields which are relate to
brain science, stress is the most harmful factor to concentrate on one’s works.
This can be attributed to the reasons that excessive stress can not only harm
one’s physical fitness but also discourage one’s mental health. Thus, adequate
breaks are indispensible for students who seek an effective way to get high
grades. For further illustration, take the case recently occurred in Korea. 2
months ago in Seoul, a high school student who prepared for the SAT was died. This
is because he had felt too much pressure and headache but there were no rest
time for him because this school had no vacations. In other words, the school’s
no vacation policy triggered this tragic case. This is an obvious example for
why the policy that students go school during 11 months a year will have
negative influence on both students’ body and mind.
In conclusion, I am completely
against the idea that students should attend classes for 11 months a year. The
reasons are not only students should attain a variety of experiences out of
school, but also that it is essential for students to relieve their stress. Thus,
these are the two most convincing reasons for my contention. |
