It is generally said that using mobile phones on public transportation should be prohibited. Some people might agree that noise from talking on a cell phone might make other people be annoyed. I, however, strongly believe that ban on using cell phone is not necessarily needed.
In fact, there is a more effective way to maintain quiet atmosphere of public transportation. Instead of banning use of cell phone, government can conduct the campaign that encourages people to turn the mode of cell phone to the vibration mode. There is a interesting case that strengthens this idea. Last year, government conducted a huge campaign for people using public transportation to change their cell phone's mode to vibration or lamp mode. As a result, two distinctive things were occurred. First, the frequency of quarrels, caused by noise of cell phone, is reduced dramatically by 40%. Another result is that customer satisfaction of transportation increased by 35%. This implicates that it is not necessary that ban on using cell phone in public transportation.
Furthermore, some people who have specific jobs such as reporters and sales men have to use their cell phone even while taking public transportation. Everyone knows that these people also have the right to work and earn a living. For instance, my uncle, a reporter of Korea Times, must use his phone all the time to cover stories. If he is not allowed to use a cell phone in the subway, his favorite transportation, it will be almost impossible for him to get his job done. As this example shows, there should not be any laws that deter people from doing their job.
To summarize what I mentioned above, noise from cell phones can be alleviated by campaign which promotes people to use vibration mode, which is far more effective way than strict regulation. In addition, using cell phones on public transportation is indispensable for some people who have particular jobs. So, I believe that no one can deny that strict regulation to cell phone is not necessarily needed. |
