It is generally said that people living today are more likely to neglect their responsibilities because they tend to spend too much time on what they want do rather do what they should do. Some people might disagree with the statement because they think that it is nothing but a cliché. I, however, think that there are obvious evidences that people are prone to spend too much time on doing what they want to do more and more.
First and foremost, recent pastimes have become addictive more than the past. Everyone knows that leisure activities such as playing computer games and watching TV are far more addictive than activities in the past such as playing soccer and going for a walk. There is a trustworthy research that reflects this phenomenon. According to the research conducted by the Ministry of Education of Korea, the number of computer game players increased by 70%, and the average amount of time that people spend on playing the computer games surged from 30 minutes to 5 hours a week, compared to 10 years ago. The researchers also pointed out that playing computer games can bring about serious side effects, including mental problems such as depression, obsession, and distraction, which make people ignore their responsibilities. This implicates that leisure activities are too addictive for people to focus on their basic works.
In addition, having only one child became a heavy trend in modern society, thereby causing children to be self-centered much more than the past. It doesn’t take a genius to know that parents who have only one child are more likely to be spoon-feeding parents, which can even spoil the child. There is another research to support the opinion. According to children psychology in 2008, children having no sibling are more likely to have self-centered behaviors, including hard-headedness, doing as whatever they want, compared to children having siblings who have more likely to have disciplined behaviors, including consideration, keeping promises, and looking after one another. Likewise, the trend having only a child has influenced people to ignore their responsibilities.
To summarize what I mentioned above, addictive leisure activities and the trend having only one baby make people neglect their basic responsibilities, compared to past. No one can deny that today people are much more inclined to concentrate on doing what they want, not on doing what they should do. |
