College often provides amazing experiences for students worldwide. Colleges and universities attract a diverse group of adolescents and offer just as various experiences. As such, there are uncountable reasons why students choose to go to college. Even in my family, college/university attracted my Dad, Mom, and my older sister Julie for different reasons. In the following essay, these reasons will be introduced and elaborately specified.
First, my father went to college to challenge himself. My dad lived in a poor rural setting, where education itself was very scarce—not many people even went to elementary school, and it was considered rare to see people go to college or university. In this destitute environment, my father developed much passion for education and persevered through hard and challenging situations to go to college and show that he was capable of higher education. After years of much effort, he was admitted to a prestigious school in South Korea and proceeded to obtain his Ph.D at Harvard University. Thus, to my father, college represented the key to success, and a chance to show the world his worth.
Second, my mother attended college to train as a nurse. Ever since she was young, my mom wanted to become a nurse. Because of my mom’s enthusiasm and diligence, her father fully supported her education. Hence, my mom was able to work vigorously towards a school to learn the necessary information and skills to become a nurse. As it can be seen from the above, my mom went to college to learn the appropriate skills to become a nurse.
Third, my sister attended college to find her true passion. Up until high school, my sister Julie studied vehemently for long hours because my parents expected her to get good grades. Although she maintained good grades, she never thought about what she wanted to do in her life after she graduated. Therefore, she applied to most of her schools undecided and told my parents that she would find her true passions once she goes to college. After taking classes in various fields, now as a junior at Columbia University, she majors in Biology and dreams of attending a dental school and become a renowned dental specialist. Simply put, my sister attended/attends college to find what she wants to do in her life.
In conclusion, college represents numerous ideas for different people. As can be seen with my dad, my mom, and my sister, college attracts various students with distinctly different reasons—to find new opportunities, to proceed with career planning, and even to find one’s true passion in life. |
