Why should the purpose of television be education, not entertainment? Even though some people might feel TV should be entertaining because it plays an important role for people to get rid of stress, I think the reasons why TV should be educational are obvious regarding children education.
First of all, Television can be one of the best methods of education. Everyone knows that Television can convey educational messages efficiently more than books because Television programs are composed of not only visual aids, but also sound effects. There is a trustworthy research that supports my opinion. According to the Ministry of Education of Korea in 2007, a study was done in two groups in elementary school students. Teachers taught mathematics Group A by using television program, and Group B by using text books. The result was far more astonished. Not only did Group A outperformed Group B regarding scores by 25%, but also the rate of giving up the course was less in Group A by 35%. It implicates that television could be the fine option for education.
In addition, television programs that contain violent messages or foul languages can influence children in negative ways. It doesn’t take a genius to know that children are inclined to imitate adults and pick up their behaviors quickly. My 7-year-old cousin, for example, used to watch the TV program, ‘Bad Guys’. He had begun imitating the characters in it, calling his father by his name, telling nasty jokes. So, his parents prevented him from seeing the programs, however it took long time for my cousin to stop using foul languages he had learnt form the program. Likewise, TV can have a negative impact on children.
To summarize what I mentioned above, television should be educational, instead of being entertaining, when it comes to children education, since television has a great impact on them. In this sense, the more television become educational, the more bright future we can expect for the children. |
