Some people may think that schools should invest a great amount of money in classes and libraries which will support their students' academic pursuit; however, other many not think this is necessary. Although both reasons have its own concrete reasons behind, I firmly believe that the equal amount of money should spent on sports and social activities and academic facilities. There are many reasons but the most two essential ones are as follows. First, students can become more physically fit by having an opportunity to enjoy sports activities. Second, they can develop social skills through a variety of physical and social activities.
To begin with, various sports activities enable students to become more energetic. In this competitive society, students are more likely to spend most of their time at their desks preparing for numerous examinations, ranging from simple quiz to national college entrance exam. In addition, there are only a few places to enjoy sports activities for a break. As a result, they have fewer opportunities to participate in physical activities and this has negative influences on their health. If the equal amount of funding were invested in sports facilities and in classes and libraries, schools could provide students with well-equipped gyms and more chances for physical activities. This will contribute to not only students' physical but also mental fitness. Concerning from my personal experience, I used to be glued to my desk for more than twelve hours on end everyday and hardly spent time in sports activities. My weight increased more than 18 kilograms within only six months. I suffered from obesity, diabetes and was at the risk of sudden heart attacks. However, I decided to participate in walkathon courses provided by my university and have walked around ground for five times a day as doctor suggested. With a fierce and continuous effort, I could lose more than 18 kilograms now and become more physically active.
On top of that, students can develop social skills while doing physical or social activities because these kinds of activities require collective efforts and cooperation. Knowledge only attained from books in classrooms is limited to apply to real life setting because human beings are social animals. While cooperating with friends and striving to achieve their common objectives, they can learn how to work with other people and learn valuable lessons for their future. For example, when I played in a soccer team in my high school period, I had an opportunity to learn how to cooperate to fulfill our common goals. We needed to pass one another to openings rather than tried to make a goal by ourselves. In addition, we can encourage teammates with an affirmative attitude toward our colleagues and give precious advice to someone who seemed to have problems. In conclusion, sports or social activities can equip students with more physical energy and a chance to establish the sense of cooperation. For these reasons, I definitely assert that the schools should spend the same amount of money on sports and social activities as much as classes and libraries. |
