In general, a person who has broad knowledge has been admired in our society. As the fields of subjects are increasing, the professional skills are required more comparing with few decades ago. While some people argue that University students should take classes in many different subjects, I think that the University is the palace to develop students' profession about their majors. The rationales behind my idea are the purpose of education in the University and the future of University students.
To begin with, we have to think about the purpose of University. When the first University established few hundred years ago, its main goal was merely studying and researching unknown subjects. This goal has been changed along with the change of a society, and it is vary to its location and format.
Generally, modern University's purpose is giving a professional and deep knowledge depending on a student's major. He already finished to master common knowledge when he was a high school student.
In addition, he decides to study at University and to devote approximately 4 years of his life for more complicated knowledge.
Furthermore, University has a responsibility to prepare its students for their future jobs. We can see many departments in the University relevant with vocations. The School of medicine is for nurturing a student to become a doctor, and the business school is for a future banker or a future financial analyst. Almost students in the University already decided to their job and expect the university to teach skills and knowledge to become experts when they graduate. For Example, If some University forces students to take various classes to help extending their general knowledge, they cannot be successful when they work in a company. Students who are prepared well with subjects related with his major will perform his job well.
In light of all these circumstance, the University needs to specify the kind of knowledge according to the departments and to give a chance to a student to preparing his job.
