It is debatable whether the purpose of television should focus on education or entertainment. Some people assert that television is the useful instrument for children to achieve educational purpose. However, I strongly believe that the objective of television should be for entertainment rather than education in that television is initially invented for entertainment and education based on television is too passive to accomplish educational pursuit.
Most of all, the main purpose of the television is entertainment and this has positive impacts on health. Television has been an effective instrument to entertain us since it was invented. After being exhausted from school and hectic working life, we can take a break, watching amusing television programs, such as soap opera and comedy show. Especially, because people these days suffer from many stresses related to hard-working, and other problems, the role of television as a way of relax contributes to healthy life of modern People. For example, according to the research by Ministry of Health and Welfare in Korea, 67% of the workers who watch television and laugh more than five times a day has a 30% lower risk of getting cancer than those who do not watch television. In this regard, the objective of the television should be placed on entertainment to keep our health.
Moreover, educational pursuit cannot be accomplished by educational programs on television because its teaching methods are one-sided and passive. I firmly believe that the true meanings of the education are not only on the delivery of education, but also on interaction between students and teachers. Students who have personal or academic problems should be allowed to ask their instructors for advice. However, since lots of educational programs on television just focus on giving some information to students, many students would be deprived of the opportunity to go through true education. For example, when I was preparing for my job presentation and taking courses related to major on television, I was feeling really confused how enthusiastically I aspire to that position and what I should do to prepare. I decided to consult my professors and I found his advice really useful because he has a lot of experience in that field. If I only had taken courses on television, I would have had no idea what I really want to do. In conclusion, I strongly claim that the purpose of the television should be placed on entertainment because it allows us to enjoy healthier life and education based on educational programs on television cannot provide students with true education. |
