Books were criticized as harmful and useless when novels were rapidly produced. As time passed people realized it could also withhold vast amount of information and started to value their existence. When movies first came out, the public response was similar. Movies were condemned as a source of entertainment. To some extent, this is certainly true but it is important to admit that there are moveis that have didactic informations such as facts about specific country.
Many movies such as Harry Potter series, Star Wars series and Shrek series are, no doubt, created purely for entertainment. But there are movies like Slumdog Millionaire, Bourne series and Oceans series, which is still entertaining but has some educational messages and details about certain countries. Slumdog Millionaire tells about India, Bourne series tell about United States, Russia and espionage and Oceans series tell of organized crimes around United States and Europe.
Slumdog Millionaire is one of good examples that tells a lot about a country. Its setting is India, especially the poor class of people. Although there might be some lies and exaggerations, it plainly displays how poor class on Inidia lives as well as how gangsters live in India. The movie clearly shows, as in real life, that India is still developing country. Also it shows that since its development was and is too rapid that there is a huge gap between rich and poor. Although the movie is about a poor boy who was looking for his love and wins a game show due to knowledge he gained in his life, it still tells a lot about India.
The movies are created for many different reasons. Many movies are purely created for entertainment purposes but there are many that are created to either send an educational message or inform the viewers about a specific country. |
