Since the number of sources of information increases, there is an ongoing debate over whether or not the news media, one of the information providers, is a reliable source of unbiased information. I disagree with this statement because news media companies sometimes deliberately exaggerate much information and it is also possible that a governement puts pressure on the news media.
To begin with, the news media sometimes conveys distorted and exaggerated information to people. This is because, by doing so, news media companies are able to earn more profit. It is evident that news media companies try to maximize their own profit. In order to earn more money, information should be fascinating and dramatic, which is deliberately done by the news media. Recent studies have indicated that among one hundred articles provided by 10 news media companies, 80% of the information is different from actual facts. These materials were highly overstated. They contain writers' conjectures and sometimes writers wrote as if their opinions are facts. It implies that the information provided by the news media is very dubitable.
In addition, the information conveyed by the news media is possible to be distorted by the pressure from a governement. This is because a government are reluctant to deliver bad messages to the public, such as the article about recession or inflation. Consequently, a government put pressure on the news media in order to prevent public from being confused. Also, the news media can be used by a government as a method to deceive the public. For example, historically, Hitler used the news media in order to make German people respect him. He intentionally let the news media distor information in favor of him. So the German people at that time believed that Hitler was a hero to save their country and he was making Germany more powerful. However, the information about Hitler was wrongly manipulated. This example reveals that when government intervenes in the news media, the information from the news media can be biased.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that the information provided by the news media is very doubtful. This is because many articles can be written containing exaggerations for the purpose of making more money by news media companies and they are possibly distorted by the government. All in all, we are living in a flood of information, so that we should make our effort to develop our own ability to discern right or wrong information even though there are many possibilities of distortion. |
