When people succeed, it is
because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success
There
is a controversy whether luck plays a role in becoming successful. Some argue
that hard work is the only factor in success, but I disagree that luck is not
involved in people's success at all ; most successful people tend to have been
raised by a decent and wealthy family and some people can sometimes run into
someone who can guarantee their success.
First
of all, most of the people who are successful, especially economically, are
likely to have been born in a nice family. Even though it is plausible that
people can succeed in their lives regardless of how wealthy their family is,
they are more likely to be less successful in society. This is because children
from a prosperous family often receive a better quality of education. On the
other hand, poor families might not be able support thier children's studying
as much as the rich could. To illustrate, my parents are pharmacists, so they
have been able to make extra money than rest of the middle class Koreans. There
had been no substantial difference in the quality of education that I received
as I was attending public schools just like anyone else until I was given an
opportunity to study abroad. In 2003, not every family could afford to send
their children to other countries to let them acquire language skills, which is
why I consider myself as a fortunate one.
Moreover,
there are some occasions when people unexpectedly get to know someone new who
can improve their life. In this society, what is more important than having a
academic degree or a work experience is having a broad social network. There
are numerous cases in which people became acquainted with someone very
important in their success. For example, I was working as a part-time worker at
family restaurant last summer to pay for my college tuition. One night, I
served a family whose father was the dean of my university. When I told him
that I recognize him and that I am one of the students at his school, he was
rather surprised to know that I was working there to pay for the tuition. I
believe that my situation that time made him feel sorry for me because he
offered me to give me a tuition that would cut the cost of the tuition by half
on the premise that I receive above the grade point average of 3.5. This such
event proves that people do bump into someone who is like an angel from Heaven.
In
short, I definitely cannot agree that luck has nothing to do with success ;
people can become acquainted with some important unexpectedly and being born in
a decent family can be also regarded as something fortunate.
