There should definitely be a day for Matin Luther King, the famous civil activist. Whether it is the date of his death or birth, his name needs to be on the calendar. This holiday is necessary because Martin Luther King organised various marches promoting desegregation. He made one of the most important speeches of the past few centuries. King was also a much noticed politician, mainly in America but in other parts of the world as well.
Firstly, there should be a holiday to remember Martin Luther King, because he led a series of the most influential marches across America. These marches were against racism. They provided a chance for different anti-racism organisations, like the NAACP to come together. Especially, the Selma march and the Washington DC march pressured the government to counteract the Jim Crow laws.
Secondly, Martin Luther King composed very powerful speeches that still remain valuable. For instance, one called, "I have a dream" is so significant that even nowadays, students learn about it in school. King's speeches are intended to give hope and these can thus have a postive effect on the public.
In addition, another reason why I chose Martin Luther King, is because he was a much noticed politician, both nationally and internationally.. A tremendous number of people supported him throughout the USA-and throughout the world, for his "non-violence" tactics. In particular, a vast majority of young people respected Martin Luther King. Many student groups expressed their unhappiness, after King's assassination.
Martin Luther King must be remember and he deserves a day to comemorate his achievement. He was the one who really sought to change the racial hatred that was deeply embedded in the society. Martin Luther King's marches, speeches and political skills act as evidence to why there must be a day exclusively chosen for him. |
