Today, one of the most serious problems is energy. Because our life is totally dependent on the profligate consumption of energy such as oil, water, electricity etc. Recently, some people say that the only way to prevent a waste of energy is to increase those prices. However, I think it is not the only means. We can save energy by education and incentives.
First of all, the government needs to educate students. Schools have to emphasize the importance of conserving energy at a young age. For example, when I was in elementary school, my teacher taught me some simple tips to save energy. Those were to use public transportation, to wear long johns in winter and to unplug when we did not use the electrics. I have been doing these ways since I learned from my teacher. And there is a proverb which says “A man’s hobby is carried to the grave”. Likewise, it is important to know about conservation in childhood.
Secondly, there is the way to provide incentives. Those should be given companies which are thrifty energy or try to develop it by the government. For instance, in the US, a manufacturing firm has to cut their energy use by 20 percent in order to qualify for government money. Also, nation institution should be able to select companies which attempt to make different energy. Because some corporations which they do not have any plan to develop it may receive money.
A different opinion raised the price by the government is no bad, because people are mainly sensitive to money. However, it is just a stopgap measure. In my native country of Korea, for example, the cost of gasoline is more expensive than other counties. Because Korea does not have a oilfield. While that price increased, people did not use their own cars which consumed a lot of gas in our life. However, not much later, they used oil again because of inconvenience. Now in Korea, although oil prices go up every day, they bought it every day.
To sum up, we can save energy by two ways. One is to teach for students about conservation. Another is to offer supports to companies which cut down energy expenses or really try to develop new energy. For these reasons, I disagree with the statement that the only way for the government to encourage energy conservation is to increase the price of gasoline and electricity. | |
