Essay 1: On photography
The author Susan Sontag wrote, “Photographs may be more memorable than moving images, because they are a neat slice of time, not a flow.” But I disagree with her point of view for some reasons. In my opinion, moving images can be more memorable than photographs. Susan Sontag remarked, “Television is a stream of under-selected images, each of which cancels its predecessor.” But the moving image is comprises slice of selected images, chosen by directors intentionally as well. The directors put their energy into selecting each image to create one important scene that conveys interesting story. Directors do not pick any kind of image up that is not related to the main idea.
On top of that, the Moving images are more representative of its detail than photographs. The slice of each selected image creates a moving image, and it helps viewers to support the detail of the story. It is much easier to understand the detail than just the photographs. The photographs are illustrated by the photographer or people, but the moving image can explain more about detail of what is in this image by itself like a movie. The moving images also can captivate viewer’s eyes to them. In moving images, there is movement, sound, and color that can give a feeling of curiousness to the viewers and it makes viewers focus entirely on watching the moving images. The viewer’s eyes follow the movement and the color which means the moving images powerfully create a line of sight by its special quality. For that reason, people can remember the whole story. You can keep photographs for a long time and later get them back for using whenever you want. They can be memorable objects, but it is only a piece of still image. In addition, we cannot tell all facts just by looking at it again and again, but it might make some unsolvable problems by itself. Moving images tell people almost everything they need to know about the main idea toward viewers from beginning to ending. Accordingly, the moving images are more effectively memorable.
To sum up, photographs and moving images both have pros and cons, but if I have to answer the question, moving images are better to keep one’s memories for future use than the photographs. Not only do they produce an endless stream of memorable moments, but it also can be a poignant reminder of some times like photographs. Moving images is usually well-developed and organized like a story book or movie, so one can see the moving image whenever he want and can feel the similarly same situation as he had before. All things considered, the moving images will help him to remember the past interestingly.
