I agree with the statement. Television has undoubtedly minimised communication among friends and families. People have less time available for speaking with their families and friends, because they spend time sitting in front of a television. Television encourages you to be passive too, which limits communication with other people. TV also offers you a lot of information so you keep up with news without having to communicate with others.
First of all, watching television reduces the amount of time you could spend with your family and friends. For example, a twenty minute of “the Simpsons” means twenty minutes less to spend strolling in the park with your best friend. A catchy program can easily rivet you for an hour. You have less time for your families and friends. Thus, you have less time to communicate with them.
Television encourages you to be passive. When you are a spectator, you are not actively participating. The television gives you the information and you can just lie back comfortably. This tendency can continue in real life. In conversations with families and friends, you can become more passive. This cuts down on the communication part, as you listen to other people, with your mouth shut, just as if you were watching a TV.
Another reason is that television offers you a lot of information. Before, there were letters to disperse important news between families and friends. Such intimate means of communication however, is no longer necessary. TV tells you what is going on, on the other side of the world. You do not need to ask your friends and families about it. CNN can tell you how the world is getting on in a flick of light.
Overall, Television has definitely decreased communication among friends and family. As more time is spent watching it, there is less time for such personal communication. TV teaches you to be passive; passive even in conversations with your families and friends. Finally, a television transfers a lot of information so you may feel that there is no need to communicate with your relatives and friends. | |
