There is an ongoing debate over whether or not teachers should be
paid as much people having well-paid jobs, such as doctors, lawyers and
business leaders. Some people might agree with this idea in that what teachers
do is very valuable and important. However, I am against this stance and
present my reasons below.
To begin with what teachers do is
strongly public. In Korea, people are forced to receive education until they graduate
from their high school and teachers take responsibility for offering this task.
So, teachers are considered as public workers and their salary is determined by
the governmental policy. Since the purpose of such public works is not to
maximize profits, teachers’ salary cannot be high as much as other jobs. If the
salary of teachers is high, it must be natural that ordinary people in a
country have to pay a huge amount of money for an educational service. Then, it
is highly likely that some people cannot be served an elementary level of
education but they are deserved for being provided such educational service.
But even assuming the above is very
plausible, some may argue that teachers’ work is very important, so that we
should appreciate their efforts and contribution. Yet, I still put an emphasis
on my idea because there is one more important matter to consider.
One advantage of being a teacher is
that teachers are guaranteed by government not being fired until they abandon
their jobs by themselves. Also, after they retire, they receive pension while lawyers or doctors are not subjected to it. That is, a teacher is very stable job. Accordingly, it is surely said that teachers are offered reasonable treatment
by a government. That’s why many people try to be a teacher
even though the salary is not relatively high enough. If being a teacher is not
appealing, the salary of teacher would be naturally increased.
To sum up, everyone may hold a different
position on this issue. Yet, all things considered, I firmly believe that the
salary of a teacher should not be as much as lawyers, doctors or business
leaders. This is because, teachers are in charge of providing public
educational services and they already receive reasonable treatment. |
