There is an ongoing debate regarding whether speaking ability is more important than writing ability. While some people say that writing ability is more important because writing is more long-lasting than speaking, it seems evident to me that speaking ability is far more important than writing ability. The rationale behind this is that social skill is up to speaking ability and oral interview is highly important when finding employment.
First of all, the ability to speak well is directly related to one’s social skill. Since most of the communication among people happens in spoken form rather than in written form, speaking ability is the key factor deciding one’s interpersonal skill in many cases. When we meet someone for the first time, the first thing we do is talking to each other. After talking to a person, we not only decide if we can be close to him or her, but also judge the person whether he or she is a reliable person. For example, when I entered the university, I did not have any friends at school. However, through the conversation with other students, I had chances to get to know about them, and some of them who showed their interest during the conversation became my close friends. On the other hand, the students who felt uncomfortable to talk to strangers failed to make friends and spent most of their time alone in the end. In this regard, I strongly believe that speaking skill often decides one’s interpersonal skill.
Additionally, a great number of companies have oral interviews. Many companies now think that they cannot know about their candidates thoroughly by papers, thus they make a final decision according to the results of oral interviews. In this case, speaking ability is the crucial factor. For instance, I have a friend who has been having a hard time finding a job because she is always rejected at the interviews. Even though she has outstanding grades and experiences, as well as highly attracting cover letter, she ends up failing to make a good impression in front of interviewers due to lack of skills to speak about her feelings and thoughts. Unlike her, another friend who has lower grades and less experiences succeeded to find employment as a result of oral interview. In this sense, it is clear to me that speaking ability is more important than any other ability when finding a job.
In conclusion, without any doubt, I firmly believe that the ability to speak well is more important than the ability to write well. The reason is that speaking ability is the most crucial factor when it comes to social skill. Moreover, oral interview is a deciding factor when finding employment. All in all, I believe that the best way to express ourselves is speaking. |
