Some people say that job promotions have to be awarded according to merit and other claim that it is based on seniority. Personally, I agree with the former’s view because of the following two important reasons. First of all, by choosing the criteria based on merit in terms of promotion, the ability of employees can be enhanced. In addition, this policy is more helpful for the company to get better working outcomes from their workers.
To begin with, through the competition independent from seniority, working people can make their capability about their field improved. If promotions are decided by seniority, working people would not put much effort on their works. It makes them incompetent to their job, so they cannot have chance to improve ability in their area of job. Take my filed of job as an example. Now, I’m working for an electronic company. About ten years ago, on promotion in my field, the seniority was the most important considering elements to promote to upper class. At the time, person who was in the promotion year, they would not work very hard and study their field much more. However, the headquarters of my company changed the policy for promotion, which is more stressed in one’s merit. By doing so, competition environment are made, and then most of perspective promoting people did their best in their field. Of course, it makes them better specialize person in their field.
Moreover, the company can get better result from this system in which one’s merit is main source for promotion. In generally, the more strict competition is occurred, the better results are made. This is because, when people compete with others, they easily come up with better ideas. According to Samsung Economics Research Institute, the cases of making significant ideas are much more in competitive environment rather than in common situations. This study pointed out that most of global company introduced the new promotion system, which is base on respective worker’s merit. In this regard, as for promotion, it is better to raise their worker higher class based on their ability for the benefits of company’s development.
All in all, I firmly believe that the ability of each worker is more important than their seniority on promotion. The reasons why this system is better are helpful for both the development of worker’s ability and the company’s thrive. |
