Undoubtedly, friendships play a significant role in people’s daily lives in many of the places where they work or play. Some people think that having similar interests and similar views in crucial topics or trusting each other completely is the most effective way to last friendships a long-time between people, while others argue that helping each other in a crisis and when something goes wrong is the best way to sustain friendships. Both sides may have their own reasons to support their views. If I were asked to choose one, I would say that helping each other in an emergency is the most important way for long-lasting friendships. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with, when people assist with each other in a dangerous situation, it will help them cultivate important qualities needed for success which are positive for long-lasting friendships. Being altruistic requires them to be diligent, passionate, and self-disciplined. When these personal traits are developed, it is likely to bring a better result in life and relationship between friends. For example, John, one of my friends did poorly in high school. He got distracted easily, procrastinated, and acted on impulse. However, he has changed gradually after he began to help his classmates who got hurt. He realized that his aid for someone else helped him associate well with others more easily, while his laziness could negatively affect everyone. Thanks to his sense of altruism, he was able to maintain good relationships with his friends and even encouraged others to be more selfless. Without this experience, he would not have been able to last good friendships.
In addition, when people help each other in a crisis, they can mingle well with people from different backgrounds. It exposes them to different lifestyles, cultures, and customs. Such exposure is likely to help them to acknowledge that different values exist, to understand this diversity and ultimately be comfortable with it. For instance, many research teams, including the Tokyo Research Center, analyzed data from two groups of young adults. One group consisted of those who had always given a hand to others in an emergency, and the other group was made up of those who had never helped others when something goes wrong. The researchers found that the former was more likely to have a higher level of open-mindedness than the latter. In particular, the first group respected foreigners, befriended them and treated them equally. On the other hand, the second group tended to ignore foreigners, single them out and discriminate against them. This implies that assisting with others can expand their perspectives on a global level and it ultimately helpful to lasting relationships with others.
All things considered, I strongly believe that assisting with each other in a danger situation is the most effective way for long-lasting friendships. All in all, the importance of helping each other in a crisis and when something goes wrong cannot be overestimated. |
