The reading
passage and the lecture both deal with the origin of forts with vitrified stones.
The reading passage provides three pieces of evidence to prove the plausible
origins of these forts with distinctive stonework, whereas the lecture argues
against it by providing three compelling rebuttals. Firstly, the article points out that the
vitrification was caused by signal fires. From the fires, the rocks have been
melted continuously and they can be vitrified. Then, vitrified stones are
located in the upper parts of the wall, which is the logical field for signal
fires. However, the lecturer challenges the point by stating that the signal
fires could affect only one or two places. (순서변경)Signal fires are not a
proper cause of the vitrified forts because they had just an effect on the
limited area. Therefore, it does not make sense that the
phenomenon of vitrification did occur through the large amount of forts. Secondly, the author argues that lightning is
one of the candidates for explaining the phenomenon. Repeated lightning can
transform rocks into glass-like substances and it contributed to being
vitrified of the forts. Also, it was
powerful enough to break out the walls. On the other hand, the professor makes
an opposing point to this argument. The professor's point is that this
argument is problematic. This is because, the phenomenon can be detected up to
one hundred meters, quite large. What the size mean is that lightning is
not cause of this special forts. This is because it is impossible to
lightning over and over in this same limited field.
Finally, the writer goes on to explain that
the forts were built using volcanic rocks. Volcanic eruption made the lots of
rocks melt and fuse together. These aggregates were used to build their
fortresses. On the contrary, the speaker refutes the writer's claim by stating
that this explain have no evidence. There are no written
documents in many archives that they observed a volcanic activity in the
local places. As an attempt to build the forts, people had to bring the vitrified
stones from other places that far from their place. They could not do
that because they had not proper roads between the places. |
