Some people are attracted to dangerous sports or activities that might
even risk their lives. Doing
activities that can threaten one’s own life voluntarily can’t be understood by
many people. However, there lies a strong impetus behind these behaviors. Doing
dangerous activities can make you realize what life means to you and it can
also give you a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
To start with, facing life-threatening
situations, people can realize the value of life. Most people live a tedious,
ordinary
life, which hardly allows them to realize and appreciate the meaning of life on
a daily basis. However, when people encounter a hazardous situation, they
suddenly come to appreciate the pricelessness of their life. Life itself and
every moment
of it become so special and precious. There is a recent study done by University
of Toronto that supports this idea. Before the experiment, the researchers
first implemented interviews and surveys to the subjects to figure out how much
value the subjects put to their own life. Then, the researchers simulated a risky
situation to induce the subjects to believe that they are in grave danger.
After encountering what they believed to be a threat to their life, they were again
interviewed and surveyed as to how much they value their life. The result was
shocking. On average, the subjects displayed 55 percent increased rate of love
towards their lives. Hence, doing dangerous activity can make your life more
precious and invaluable.
On top of that, challenging a dangerous task
and
achieving success can get you more than enough sense of accomplishment. People have
a tendency to avoid dangerous and difficult tasks, especially when it comes to
a task that is chancy. However, when they go on to try the dangerous
task and manage to succeed it, the sense of fulfillment they will encounter is
huge. That one experience can make them feel better about themselves. For
instance, I went on a trip to Pusan, where there was a bungee jump dock in the
middle of a high sea. At first, I never even thought about doing the jump because
I was extremely frightened of the height. However, I eventually performed the
bungee jump despite my fear. Before, I’ve always considered myself as a timid
and indecisive
little girl. However, after the jump, my view about myself completely changed. Having
done the bungee jump, I had nothing to fear or worry about. I realized that I
am far more brave and decisive than I thought. This feeling of success overwhelmed
me and I became very confident about myself. .
To sum up, dangerous activity can get people
realize the meaning of life and achieve great sense of accomplishment. They
must be the reasons why some people have fixation on doing hazardous activities
or sports.
