Some people stated that the government should replace old historic buildings with modern buildings, since old buildings are very dangerous due to its age and also are not sufficiently functional in these days. While this argument looked quite plausible, I firmly disagreed with this idea based on several reasons described in the following. First of all, old buildings have a great deal of values in various perspectives. Firstly, modern architects can learn the history of architecture and architectural knowledge from old buildings. For example, the Great Cathedral in Spain built by Gaudi showed unbelievably accurate and elaborate building skills to modern people. In addition, old buildings can give educational effects to young children. For instance, the Gyungbok palace in Korea can give young students opportunities to understand historical knowledge about Joseon dynasty and to feel the patriotism to their country. Thus, considering these kinds of beneficial values, the government should contemplate more prudently before making a decision to replace old buildings with modern buildings. Secondly, old buildings can be an attractive tour site which can be an lucrative resource for the government. In fact, some countries which have famous old buildings have earned much money from foreign visitors. In the case of China, there is the Great Wall which is one of the fourth mysteric sites in the world. the Great Wall attracts millions of people from the world every year. Additionally, there are a lot of other examples such as the Ankor Watt in Camboida, the Pyramids in Egypt, the Big Ban in England and so on. In this regard, the government can utilize old buildings as their attractive tour site and make money from it. Consequently, considering the advantages of preserving old buildings above, the government needs to be prudent when they make a decision whether they replace old buildings with modern buildings. Old buildings is not a kind of outdated trash but precious heritages from ancestors and invaluable assets for our next generation. |
