In the reading passage, there are ample support for author`s claim that genetically modified (GM) crops are beneficial for humans. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to author`s point. First, the professor contends that the GM crops are not realistic solution for world hunger problem. The yield of GM crops do not enough to alleviate the food problem in the world. And also, all foods are not equivalently distributed worldwide. Thus, the problem will be not alleviated by GM foods. This casts doubt on the reading passage`s claim that the problem of world hunger can be solved by using GM crops. Next, the professor suggests that GM crops are more expensive than existed food. For example, agricultural companies have spent a lot of money in order to grow GM crops. The companies cannot expect the profit by selling the crops. Additionally, it is required more water to cultivate GM crops. It means that we need to use lots of money and food for obtaining GM crops. This counters reading passage`s assertion that food prices could be declined by GM corps. Finally, the professor argues that the GM crops cannot be edible vaccines. Most of GM vaccines consist of banana or tomato which are easily spoiled in warm weather. Thus, it is difficult for genetically modified vaccines to store and transport vast distances. This refutes the reading passage`s suggestion that GM vaccines can be alternative to conventional one due to their durability. |
