The reading passage contends about several methods
which can be used to stop the spread of the fungus that causes white-nose
syndrome, WNS; increasing the acidity, involving antifungal treatments, providing
artificial habitats for the bat species. On the other hands, the lecturer
brings out several points that why these plans cannot be implemented.
First, the lecturer argues that it is untrue that
increasing acidity in cave is the effective way to keep bats safe from WNS.
According to the lecturer, a recent study shows that fungus can thrive in all
kind of environments. Even extreme conditions could not affect fungus.
Moreover, it is an unrealistic idea that increasing all of the habitats’ acidity
at high level because it is too large. This casts doubt on reading passage’s
claim that increasing acidity level is able to make fungus no more survive.
Second, the lecturer mentioned that it is unlikely
that using antifungal drugs can keep bats safe from fungus. If fungicides are
applied to the all of the wall in the cave, it is probable that delicate eco system
can be ruined by these drugs. Also, they can harm other beneficial fungus. Like
this, since this method can harm entire balance of the habitat, it is not a practical
way to remove fungus. This refutes the reading passage’s argument that
antifungal treatments can effectively remove fungus.
The final point made by lecturer is that constructing artificial
habitats for bats cannot be a solution to solve WNS issue. First, constructing artificial
habitats for all of the animals is unrealistic. In addition, even bats can be
safe in the isolated environment, they can be vulnerable once they return to
the natural habitat. That is why this solution is not a realistic solution.
This counters reading passage’s assertion that providing artificial habitats
can protect bats against the WNS fungus. |
