Some people prefer to study with popular teachers because they lead classes with a sense of humor and help students have an interest in the subjects. However, other people think that students should choose professors with outstanding academic achievements. Basically, I think, each side has its own pros and cons, but I strongly believe that it is better to take a required course taught by a professor who has been successful in the research dimension. This is because the main purpose of university education is not to enjoy campus life but to cultivate professional knowledge, and students should prepare their future in their college years.
Students keep in mind that the purpose of university education is to provide students with education and skills that would be needed to get jobs in the future. Therefore, when deciding a required course in college, students have to find information about the professors and choose those who have a lot of research experiences and awards related to the fields. Let me explain my experience as an example. When I was a college student, I tended to take courses recommended by senior students. They recommended some classes since the professors were very gentle and humorous, and I enjoyed the classes and was able to make good relationships with the lecturers. However, one of my teachers, who taught the ancient greek history, changed completely my life at all. She was the most famous scholar in the area and had been awarded from eminent academic conferences. Also, she wrote five books that were translated and read by people around the world. Although she gave very experienced and skillful lessons, it was too hard for me to keep up with the class due to a significant number of reading materials and assignments. However, after finishing that semester I found that I had a new ability and insight to understand an ancient history in greater depth. This experience made me go to graduate school to major in history. I could study an ancient history without any problems and limitations because I had been trained by her. Had it not been for the professor, I couldn’t have learned such useful academic lessons.
To sum up, it is better to spend college years developing the possibilities and knowledge for the future. This is because this short period, about four or five years, has a great important role in their jobs and lives. In this regard, students should choose the required courses with a standard focusing on the professors’ academic ability and background. |
