In modern complicated society, most people would be inclined to think of a romantic way for their future. It seems better for them, however, it might not have positive impacts in the long run. To pursue a better life, continuous progress, development, and comfort in one’s life would be of great importance. Accordingly, I would argue that focusing on real life would be more beneficial for people to live better in the long term. This is because people can easily find their weaknesses and bridge the gap immediately and minimize psychological harm.
First and foremost, the realistic view would help people seek their shortcomings and overcome them as soon as possible. It gives an opportunity for people to rectify their faults and try to think better way before they become problems. This process would lead people to be developed beyond measure because growth does not come out of the blue without endless efforts on correcting mistakes. To exemplify this, I would like to unfold my own experience. Merely having ceaseless thoughts of getting A+ for all subjects over the course of my second year in university made me hard to figure out what I did not understand in macroeconomy course. In retrospect, I could not grasp the point of the exact relationship between inflation and unemployment. Yet, I simply thought all of the students in my class did not catch this relationship clearly as well and did not study hard enough. My ideal belief brought about missing the chance of examing what I have learned in class, which resulted in getting B in the course. This example proves that unrealistic approach toward oneself would cause failure.
On top of that, living a realistic life minimizes psychological harm when encountering unfortunate circumstances. In general, misfortunate events stoke people to be distressed, which continuously prevents them from working efficiently as they did usually. This would be harmful to develop themselves and hamper to live a stable life in the long run. For instance, my sister got panicked when she had found out that her project named ‘Advocacy for the planet’ that she had contributed greatly was canceled because of the worldwide infectious diseases last year. Although realizing the danger of the virus two weeks before being announced that this project was withdrawn, she had continuously posited that the virus would become a serious problem after she completed her project well without any reason. She had to go to the hospital because of her mental illness caused by this event for three weeks. This exemplifies that ideal thinking would cause huge mental anguish when it did not go well.
So far, I have argued that facing reality is helpful for people to live well considering that they seize the chance to surpass weaknesses on the spot and it has positive impacts on minimizing damages on mental health when it comes to unpredictable events.
