▶ Your Answer : It is debatable whether getting advice from
older adults is better getting advice from peers. This is an interesting
question because opinions concerning this issue can be different depending on
the individual perspectives. However, I totally agree with the statement above
and my view can be greatly substantiated by the following reasons. To begin with, since older adults lived
longer, they might have more experiences on many different aspects of life. Most
of them have gone through the same problem that I struggle now, so they can
give us a productive and effective advice on my problem of life. For instance,
I had a hard time preparing university when I was in 12th grade. I didn’t have
much information about university so I couldn’t prepare anything required to
enter university such as TOEFL, SAT, and essay. I thought I have to do
something so I asked to my friends what I do but my friend’s advice was not
helpful because they also didn’t know much about university and they were
preparing their own university. However, once I asked my homeroom teacher and I
got an answer, her response influenced me totally different from my peers’
advice. After she listened to my situation, she answered and gave real
solutions for me based on her experience in her period of time preparing her
university. If I had not spoken to her, I would never got accepted to
university.
On top of that, modern society is already
too competitive environment which means people can not easily get advice from their
peers. Generally speaking, these competitive environment discourages people
from asking their peers for advice. This is because our society have changed to
only praises the best. In my personal experience, when I was studying for my
final exams, I had a friend who was cynical whenever I asked for help. He would
say that he did not know about the answer. He was very competitive and winning
was everything to him. In fact, he was doing a lot of prepare such as getting
private tutoring and solving a lot of problems. In the end, He got almost all
correct answer without few questions. I was deeply hurts by his lies. From this
kind of experience, I realized that getting advice from friends is difficult.
For these reasons, I firmly believe that
adults give more helpful and effective advice than peers do.
