There might be some people who believe that
teacher’s opinion on social and political issues in class is helpful for
students. However, I personally disagree with the above idea for two subsequent
reasons. First, teachers’ view can make students biased. Second, teaching
specific political view can trigger unnecessary social debate.
To begin with, making students exposed to
teachers’ opinion can result in biased perception of students. Teachers are one
of the most important means by which students can understand the world around
them, However, as students do not have the ability to criticize on specific
views, they can easily just absorb the teachers’ unpurified opinion. As a
result, students of teachers who expose their social and political stance would
have prejudiced sight without any kind of scrutiny. According to research
conducted by Seoul National University Sociology Center, two group of students
were instructed on some social matters. Group A learned general knowledges of
the matters, but Group B also learned the lecturer’s personal opinion. At the discussion
after the class, group A outperformed group a in the ability of creativity and
flexibility for solving different issue, suggesting that teaching specific opinion
will leave a negative impact on students.
In addition, injecting social and political
views of teachers can cause unnecessary social debate. For over many years,
schools have been considered to educate general knowledge for students. However,
if teachers are allowed to teach their own political and social opinion, lots
of political groups would try to influence students through educational
institutions, which would make schools battlefields of political groups. Let me
bring up a historical incident happened in Korea. About 5 years ago, as the
conservative party became the ruling party, the government tried to revise
history textbook based on their own political view. Those tries triggered
enormous social debate and caused serious social conflict between different
social groups. Even teachers were divided into two groups about the change of
the textbook and it was a total mess.
To sum up, teaching of social and political
views of teachers can make students prejudiced and cause social conflict. In
this regard, I personally believe that students should not be exposed to teachers’
opinions o social and political issues in class.
