In life, we are involved in many groups in a society, and different roles are given to us within groups. In terms of our roles in a group, there are two kinds: a member or the leader of a group. Although each person has different views about which one would be better for ourselves, I strongly believe that becoming the leader of a group is much better for us for the following subsequent reasons.
At first, a leader can learn responsibility through managing a group. Responsibility is not an innate thing but a thing enhanced via experiences like playing a role as a leader. A leader has to make a lot of decisions, which connotes that a leader has to take charge of consequences. Also, a leader leads the members of a group at every moment, so all their actions and even mistakes within groups are considered as the leader’s ones. In this sense, they can naturally learn responsibility, although performing a leader’s role is not easy and can be a huge burden. For instance, I was the president of a discussion club at college, and that experience made me take on more responsibility albeit a stressful role. I cared about each member about club activities and behaved with discreet thoughts because my management greatly affected the club and members. Through this process, I could be more mature and learn responsibility.
Secondly, a leader can develop forward thinking. A leader consistently thinks and makes a decision for a group, which is not always right and might not bring a good result. That is why their ability to judge is very important. A leader is a person who affects the fate of a group, so they should consider the future of group, not to mention the present. There might be a high-risk in their decisions in the present situations, but groups should be able to make sacrifices or take risk for their better future. In this regard, a leader can improve forward thinking spontaneously. To illustrate, when I ran my study center, I underwent trial and error in many ways. For the development of groups and students, I always tried to see the big picture, and it enlarged my forward thinking.
To sum up, being a leader improves us when it comes to responsibility and forward thinking. Even making sacrifices as a leader makes us more mature and influences members for good. I hope that there will be more and more good leaders who can have a good impact on our society as well as on the groups that they represent.
