▶ Your Answer :
Whether reading books is a more satisfying
pastime than watching movies can be contentional subject. Depending on one’s
perspective, taste, and personal experiences, one’s opinion toward this issue
can significantly differ. I don’t think there is a right answer for this. That
being said, in my opinion, reading books have some advantages over watching
movies for two reasons.
First of all, one can read books at any
time, in any place. Paper books are handy to carry, and even e-books have
emerged as a state-of-the-art way to read books. One can read books during busy
times if one can spare some time intermittently. For example, one can read
books when one is on a public transportation. However, it is quite not good to
watch movies with interruptions. It is generally supposed to read books for
days. In contrast, movie makers normally expect one to watch a movie
straightly. To watch a movie, one cannot help but assigning a chunk of long
time. Designated movie schedules are also an issue.
For example, I read The Selfish Gene for
days. I could have time to do other things when needed. When I was tired, I
just took a nap to be revitalized. But when I watched a movie, Transformer, I
felt tired and had no option but to doze off in a theater because I cannot take
a rest and then watch the movie again later.
Secondly, reading books cost less than
watching movies. Generally speaking, the average price of books is cheaper than
the average price of movie tickets. In South Korea, one can buy a book and read
it at any time one wants at about 12,000 won. However, one can watch a movie
for only once with the same money. Furthermore, one can borrow books at near
public libraries without paying any fee. However, it is still not possible to
watch movies without buying tickets or DVDs. And DVDs are more expensive than
books.
For example, I can borrow almost all books
I’d like to read in University libraries or local District public libraries for free.
If I buy a book, I can read it any time I want without limitations. In
contrast, I have to buy tickets to watch movies in a multiplex theater, and I
have to buy another ticket to watch it again. It is still not widely available
to borrow DVDs in public libraries and it cost a lot to buy DVDs.
For these reasons. I think reading books is
more satisfying me than watching movies as pastime. I can save more money by
reading books. And I can have control over time and place when I decide to read
a book rather than watch a movie. |
