In the lecture, the professor casts doubt
on the reading passage’s idea that using fluorescent lamps has many drawbacks
rather than merits. The professor asserts that fluorescent lights have many
advantages for the following subsequent three reasons.
First and foremost, according to the
reading passage, it is inefficiently to use in light of price. Whilst there is
no difference in brightness between fluorescent bulbs and incandescent lamps,
the price of fluorescent lamps is 3 to 10 times. In opposition to this
argument, the professor claims that utilizing fluorescent lamps is
cost-effective from a long-term perspective. Fluorescent lamps’ time duration
is 6,000 to 15,000 hours but incandescent lamps are 750 to 1,000 hours. As a
result, fluorescent lamps are more affordable.
On top of that, the reading passage
describes how mercury in fluorescent lamps can affect the environment. Although
the amount of mercury is small, it has enormous poisonous, having a negative
influence on environmental contamination. In contrast, the professor argues
that mercury in fluorescent lamps is not trouble because fluorescent lamps can
be recycled. Therefore, if people do not break a fluorescent light and reuse,
the chemical composition is not discharged to the environment.
Lastly, the author of the reading passage
states that fluorescent lamps have an adverse impact on not only the
environment but also human’s health. When people breath in gas in fluorescent
lamps, they can gain chronic lungs disease. Furthermore, ultraviolet rays
emitted by fluorescent lamps can cause skin cancer. However, the professor
points out that only when people are exposed to ultraviolet rays within 20cm
for a long time, lungs illness can arise, so it is a scarce case. Moreover,
skin cancer does not develop from healthy people and thus fluorescent lamps are
safe. |
