▶ Your Answer :
In the reading
passage, there is ample support for the author’s claim that coal is important due
to its various advantages. However, in the lecture, the professor gives several
reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s point.
First, the
professor contends that the coal mining process is complicated. The amount of
coal close to the surface is limited. So people have to dig deep burrows to get
them. Also, this process needs highly technical skills and many trained workers.
This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that it is not difficult to
mine near the surface so people can save time and effort.
Next, the
professor insists that shipping coal is costly. This is because this energy source
is heavy and bulky so people have to trip several times by train or truck. In
this result, the price of coal becomes more expensive than other sources. This
counters the reading passage’s assertion that coal is not expensive to
transport since this energy source is not dangerous.
Finally, the
professor argues that the coal industries dose not makes more jobs. In recent,
many companies make effort to reduce the price by using labor saving
technologies. Thus, fewer human are required in this industry. Even worse, the
number of people hired is expected to decline in the foreseeable future. This
refutes the reading passage’s suggestion that the coal companies will be
helpful to many workers because they create many jobs.
