Some people think that making students take a public speaking course as a requirement for graduation is a good way to develop students' ability to talk in front of a lot of people.
However, I think this is not a good idea because the public speaking course is
not essential to all students and this policy even can worsen students’ speaking
ability.
First, good public speaking ability is not required for
all students. It is commonly believed that speaking in front of many people is
important ability to succeed
in the future and that's
why some people think this course should be a requirement
for students. However, every people have their own advantage and they do not
need to get stressed out to improve their weakness. People can succeed and get
a good job even if they do not have good speaking skills. Let me bring my
personal experience as an example. When I was a student at a University, I took psychology class and listened to a very
interesting story from the psychology professor. She said that almost 40% of people who succeeded in the world have an introvert
personality and they are not good at speaking in front of people because personality
is closely related to speaking skills. It was very shocking
to me because I have thought that speech is an important part of success. As a result, I could
learn that everyone has their own advantages and disadvantages and they do not
need to spend too much
time and effort if
they suffer from stress because there are a lot of ways that people can
succeed by enhancing their benefits.
Second of all, this mandatory course even
can give negative effects on some
students. Speaking in front of a lot of people needs confidence. If some students who do not have confidence in public speech have to take a class
and speak in front of large
groups of people, it can make the students lose their confidence
more. Let me bring my friend's story as an example. My friend Anne was not good
at speaking in front of people because she was shy and afraid of public speaking.
To make this situation better, her parents took her to summer speech class at her age 18. She didn't
want to go there but her parents just forced her to go there. In the camp, she got so
stressed out and she even lost her confidence more and her speech skill was
lowered after this experience. Therefore, this requirement can have negative
effects on some students and make the situation even worse.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that
speech skill is not essential to all students so that they do not need to take
class for a requirement because it can be a waste of time and also this policy
can decline their speech skills.
