The reading passage argues that the Salton
Sea which is a salty lake in California is getting salty and there are some ways
to reduce the salt level. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several
points that contradict this argument.
First, the lecturer argues that
desalination facilities lead (주어 동사 불일치) to the problems. These facilities make steam to
evaporate the water, and salt will be left behind. During these cycles (these + 복수명사), other
toxic chemicals such as ‘selenium’ are also exposed to people. When people inhale
these chemicals, it provokes dangerous health problems. This refutes the
reading passage’s claim that desalination facilities that use steam would
be a good solution for restoring the lake.
Second, the lecturer asserts that local
government will not pay resources to build a canal or pipelines. Moreover, the distances
are over one hundred kilometers long. Since it is (가주어 it입니다.) expensive to connect a
long distance, the government could not afford to do it. This rebuts the
reading passage’s claim that bringing the sea water to the lake could be a
solution using a canal or pipelines.
Finally, the lecturer points out that because
of the geological activities such as earthquakes, the walls cannot be a
long-term solution. They will be back to the normal when the earthquakes occur.
This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that it would be a good
solution to build walls to divide the lake into several sections allowing small
rivers to flow into the main stream of the lake.
