Some people think that students should be given homework on a daily
basis. However, in my opinion, students should not be assigned homework every
day, because the given homework can conflict with other things that students
want to do and giving them a huge amount of assignments can make them tired and
lose their interest in studying.
To
begin with, if teachers give students homework every day, it can conflict with
the things that students pursue. Studying is the main duty of the students, but
they have other things to design their own lives. For instance, I joined the
school band when I was a high school student. I relieved stress from studying
by playing guitar with my band members. But in the next semester, my new
chemistry teacher assigned me a lot of homework to do. Its load was too heavy
to finish in time and I have to quit my band practices frequently to manage it.
As a result, I had to drop out from the band and it was a very unpleasant
experience.
On
of that, assigning a lot of homework can make students feel sick of it and
yield bad effects, such as losing interest in a certain subject. This has
proven by the Trinity University research team a few years ago. They gathered
high school students and divided them into two groups. The first group was told
to finish a large amount of test papers in a very short time and the second group
was told to finish them in autonomy. At the end of the experiment, they
examined each objects’ stress level and preference in the given subject. The
result showed that the first group’s stress level got higher and preference was
lower than the second group. This implies that there are co-relationships
between lowered subject preference and ascended stress level and study loads.
To
sum up, giving students homework every day can conflict with other things that
students pursue and result in bad effects. In this regard, I firmly believe
that students should not be assigned homework on an everyday basis.
