■ Question Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard, explaining how they cast doubt on the points made in the reading
▶ Topic : PREVENTING DESERTIFICATION
▶ Your Answer :
The reading and lecture are both about
desertification's merits and demerits. In the reading passage, the author
argues there are three problems with preventing desertification method. On the
other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on the author's claims by saying that
there are several advantages of using special device for fighting against
desertification.
First of all, the author in the reading
passage argues that the cost of a device is an expensive option to grow more
tree and prevent desertification. This is mainly due to the fact that the
installation and maintenance cost of the devices is high. In opposition to
this, the lecturer claims that using the device is a cheaper and reasonable
option because they can be reused many times over and over again.
Secondly, the writer asserts that it might
be hard to motivate the local community to care and maintain the devices in
order to stop desertification. This is because managing the devices discourage
people to fight against the desertification. On the contrary, the lecturer
counters the author's argument by saying that people can be motivated by the
amount of access to food and firewood. In other words, the device could provide
more incentive for people to participate in saving more trees.
Thirdly, the author mentions that
limitation of the device's capacity to hold and keep water. the writer thinks
that there is a possibility that the devices are not enough to be used for a
bigger tree, which they are not suitable for those threes. This is in stark
opposition to the lecturer's argument that the devices actually help tress to
survive in a harsh environment, making the trees' root longer. In addition,
there is an empirical example that trees in Sahara deserts survived almost 90%
without deceiving after they grew up enough.
