As books have been close friends to human
for a long time, the knowledge we gain from them is tremendous. At the same
time, we acquire the knowledge from personal experiences such as attending
classes, researching and exploring. It is intriguing to discuss which knowledge
from is more valuable. In my opinion, people can gain the knowledge by reading books
more than merely staying in personal experiences.
To
begin with, buying books are much cheaper than conducting real experiments. In
other words, even with less time and money, we can get a very professional knowledge
from just reading relevant books. My college experience gives a compelling example
of what I mean. When I was about to plan my own experiment as to how dogs react
to their masters. To complete all experiment process, I should reserve the laboratory
room, prepare my time, observe my dog’s response to my mother by recording videos,
and analyzing his specific motions or sounds. The whole stages were estimated
to take three months with higher cost that was unaffordable for me, as a
college student. What did I choose then? I searched Internet the books or professional
articles about my research topic. I could simply buy books and read them. To
organize my own research paper, I summarized them. It only took one month. Had
I chosen to do my own research for three months, I could not have been good at getting
good grade in that course. Books helped us a lot in gaining necessary details
that people want to know in a simpler way.
On
top of that, books make people indirectly experience the unknown world so that
people can accumulate common sense and develop their own ideas on what books said.
In some sense, personal experiences give lesson to people. For instance, if two
close friends fight each other for a small thing, they can be better-known for each
other after having conversations. That’s what people call lessons from
relationship. In contrast, books give more details than our daily experiences.
Let’s think about the space. Scientific knowledges can sometimes seem very far
and hard to understand. Historically, scientific discovery or truth has been developed
by writing people’s ideas, opinions and refutes. Normal people who are not even
expert in such area can approach freely in that books deliver messages in more
friendly way. Books help accumulate knowledges sequentially and deliver developed
ideas to people in details.
To
sum up, gaining knowledge from reading books costs less than personally
experiencing. Moreover, books help people accumulate and develop their own
ideas. In this regard, I am of an opinion that it is a lot better to gain knowledge
from books, rather than experiencing.
