▶ Topic :
In order to encourage children to study harder, parents should avoid letting them watch television.
▶ Your Answer :
Some people think that allowing children to watch television can be helpful for them to study effectively. However, in my opinion, parents need to control their kids’ the amount of time to that their kids spend on TV properly. This is because televised programs make kids lose their focus on studying, and those can also disturb the improvement of ability to learn from reading materials.
To begin with, young students cannot fully concentrate on what they are learning due to television. Once children begin to make an access to programs on air, what they watched start to hover in their mind, thereby leading to the decrease of concentration. Sometimes, children also try to watch TV covertly in classes or during studying at home. For example, a study was conducted by the Department of Education in Seoul National University to determine whether the amount of time a students watches TV could affect adversely their concentration a capability to focus. There were two groups monitored. The first group was formed of middle school students who have watched television more than three hours a day for more than one year. They were asked to solve a problem set which was constituted by 100 extremely easy questions that can also be handled by elementary school students. The other group consisted of those who attend a middle school who do not have TV in their house, and they were given the same direction. As a result, the students in the former group could not complete the task well and made much more mistakes than those in the latter one. This was because those who have spent more time on television could not fully focus on the given problems. The result of this study proves that television inevitably has a negative effect on concentration skills.
On top of that, the knack of acquiring information from reading materials can be degraded by television. It is fairly common that videos are more sensational (Why's that?) than printed information. Therefore, kids can hardly understand information in written materials, once they become accustomed to televised programs. For instance, there was my friend in high school who could not deeply focus on one task. Especially, he had trouble reading a long passage at one time, and was really bad at writing a long essay which was given as an assignment. When I asked him why he was not able to finish his homework, he confessed it to me that he had made a habit of watching TV while eating dinner everyday since when he was in elementary school. Come to think of it, I hold that his old habit made a totally negative result in his ability to focus on reading.
To sum up, watching television is able to degrade the capability of concentration and obtaining information through reading. In this regard, I firmly believe that parents should recommend their children that they be far from television to study hard and efficiently.
