The reading passage contends that in order to reduce carbon dioxide which leads to global warming, there are several solutions for this. On the other hand, the lecturer brings several points that contradict the reading passage's claim that these solutions do not work at all.
First of all, increasing iron cannot be a permanent solution for reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide. This is because if we increase the number of iron, the phytoplankton feeding on iron will run of nitrogen. Then, they will decrease again. Moreover, in recent research, even though the iron will be increased, only a small percentage of carbon dioxide will be effective. However, this refutes the reading passage's claim that increasing the number of phytoplankton by adding iron to the oceans helps to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Second, building an artificial wetland does not make sense. To be specific, the capacity of an artificial wetland is twenty percent less than natural wetland, and it takes hundreds of years to fully developed. In other words, it may be too late. This rebuts the reading passage's claim that creating artificial wetland make decomposition slow because this keeps tremendous oxygen from entering the soil.
Finally, using coal mine is not effective because coal mine extracts methane which also contains carbon when it is burned. Therefore, the total amount of carbon dioxide does not reduce at all. This casts doubt on the reading passage's claim that carbon dioxide can be captured in old coal mines and this remains for hundreds of years.
