There is a
controversy over whether a school have a policy to force their students to attend
all of classes. This policy is made because they think their students will not
be in classes without it. So, it is in almost every school nowadays. However, I
truly believe that there is a side effect in this policy. This is because students
are likely to avoid the classes and they can learn essential things elsewhere.
To begin with,
students tend to have negative feelings about mandatory requirements. This is a
result of preference of freedom, which everybody desires. So, in order to make
them attend classes schools must not force them. My personal experience is a
compelling example of this. When I was at my high school, my school have rules
that every student has to follow. The rules contained that the student who did
not attend the class even for a one time, they will fail the class. Many students
felt bad about this, and, to make matters worse, some of them were just ignoring
the rule and missed their classes. One day, a student, who especially disliked
this policy, claimed that this rule had to be changed. To be more specific, if the
school change this rule, which is about punishing, to a new rule about incentive,
more students will be more likely to attend the classes. One month later, the
school had higher attending rate of students as a result of this new rule the student
suggested. This experience makes is evident to me that forcing students to
follow the policy does not seem effective.
Second, the
student can learn vital things elsewhere. In other words, the most important
lessens in life can be learned not only in schools, but also in everywhere. Students
can miss their classes and have other precious experience outside of
the classroom. For instance, my little sister wants to be a hair stylist. To achieve
her goal, she has to have experiences as many as possible. However, attending all
classes are not efficient for her, because of activities she can have in the same
time outside of the classroom. So, she entered a high school which does not have
this policy. Thanks to this fact, she is atttending an academy which teaches skills
she wants to practice and pragmatic knowledge. Recently, she got an intern in
local hair shop. Were it not for the absence of this policy, she might not have
time to learn something that is beneficial to her future.
To sum up, I firmly believe that schools must not demand full attending
of classes to their students. This only leads to objection, which drops the attending
rate. Also, school must respect students choice on how to spend their time for they
can have invaluable lessens outside of the classroom. |
