Undoubtedly, getting
knowledge plays a vital role in people’s lives in many of the places
where they work or play. Some people think that when their friends need help
with doing their homework, which you have much information, they should ask you
for help rather than a professional tutor, while others do not. Both sides may
have their own reasons to support their views. If I had to choose one, I would
say that it is better to learn from a professional tutor for friends who need
help with doing their assignments instead of me. There are several reasons and
examples as follows.
Most of all, when
people ask for information from professional tutors, it helps them to broaden
their horizons. Professional tutors expose people with different backgrounds,
religions, and cultures. This is because to be an expert in one field, one
must have much information about it and have to get a variety of experiences,
and perspectives about it as well. Such exposure is likely to allow people to
acknowledge that the different values exist, to understand the diversity, and
to ultimately be comfortable with it. For instance, when my friend Jane was in
high school, she saw one of her classmates from Ethiopia had a meal with bare
hands. She felt uncomfortable with it since it was her first time to see
someone like that. She kept her distance with him and often made fun of him.
Once, she had homework in school, researching and doing a presentation about Ethiopia’s
eating habits. She asked me to help her research as my father worked in Ethiopia
and she knew that I heard many stories from him. Even though I knew a lot about
Ethiopia, I was able to say awkwardness toward their eating styles because I
did not have hands-on experiences about it. However, she could change her
thought after she made interviews with the expert who majored in Ethiopia’s
culture. She learned from him that eating habit stems from old customs and
it was scientifically proved to be beneficial with reasons such as helping
digestion and different species of rice. She eventually realized that she and he
had just different eating styles and was able to become a friend with him. If
she had not learned different perspectives from a professional tutor, she would
not have been able to mingle with different people.
In brief, I strongly
believe that the advantages of learning from a professional tutor far outweigh
those of learning from friends who have much information for the reasons I have
mentioned above. All in all, the importance of vicarious experience about new
views from experts should not be underestimated. |
