Some people take
it for granted that it is difficult for children to get useful advice from
their grandparents. There are obviously many opinions regarding this topic, but
it is evident that listening to grandparents is necessary for children.
Admittedly, getting
advice from grandparents is too stressful for both children and their
grandparents, and this contributes to health problems. This is due to the fact
that there exists a generation gap between old and young. Grandparents are less
likely to understand their grandchildren and give them valuable advice. This
situation will stress both of them out. In fact, stress is one of the primary
factors of illnesses because it undermines the ability of the immune system in
fighting diseases. As a case in point, my uncle, a doctor at a general hospital
in a city, sometimes tells me that scores of his patients suffer adverse health
effects from stress. In particular, children who have difficulty getting proper
advice come to him for stress-related ailments and disorders. They generally
have headaches, high blood pressure, and insomnia. In this sense, it is
unhealthful for grandchildren to ask their grandparents for advice.
However, having
guidance from grandparents can increase children’s motivation in life. This is
mainly because grandparents can give useful advice coming from wisdoms and a
variety of experiences in life. This aspect can be an effective facilitator
which motivates them to improve themselves. They will make more effort,
concentrate more, and feel more responsible for what they do. Therefore, this
can lead to better outcomes at school. For instance, my brother, a high school student,
used to be very negligent and lost interest in his studies. However, since he received
valuable advice from our grandfather who was a teacher for 30 years, he has
changed little by little. He started to spend more time studying and had
enthusiasm for his learning. The reason was that my brother learned about
knowhow for studying and managing time in school. Had he not got our
grandfather’s help, he would still have been lazy.
On balance, some
might argue that grandparents cannot provide their grandchildren with helpful
advice. However, based on the idea related to motivation, we can conclude that children
can definitely get useful feedback from their grandparents.
